Spencer’s Story

In the fall of 2013, Spencer's life took a turn when his parents and school teachers noticed something was off. He wasn't acting like himself and seemed to be struggling to keep up with his peers. Those around him watched with growing concern as he became noticeably thinner and physically ill. Concern turned into reality when Spencer was diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of eleven. The news came with a daunting warning: playing basketball and sports in general might not be possible.

The following journey was challenging, filled with uncertainty, and often overwhelming. Spencer faced many moments when managing his diabetes felt like an uphill battle. Yet, through the unwavering support of his family and friends and his determination, he found the strength to push forward. Slowly but surely, he began to conquer diabetes, realizing that it didn't have to dictate his future.

In high school, Spencer reignited his love for basketball, defying the doubts cast on him. His hard work and determination paid off as he was recruited by several Division One schools, proving that his dreams were still within reach. During his sophomore year at the College Of Charleston, he and his father co-founded a foundation dedicated to supporting children with diabetes—children who, like Spencer, may feel scared or uncertain about their futures.

Now that Spencer has transferred to Louisville, he hopes to grow and inspire on a larger stage than he ever imagined. Spencer's message to children with diabetes remains clear - the only way out is through. He wants every child to know that, despite their challenges, life holds promise, and their dreams are never out of reach. His story is one of resilience, hope, and turning obstacles into stepping stones. He credits everyone who has supported him and never hesitates to express gratitude.
